Refurbish and Transform with NorDan

Our client Pocket Living had a vision to refurbish and transform the 1920’s industrial office building of Astra House in Arklow Road, London into 44 affordable homes. The homes were designed to suit first time buyers or young families as they would be sold for at least 20% less than market value. NorDan are proud to have won and worked on this high-profile project with a contract value of £124,000, supplying fixed light windows and fully reversible windows for this site in Lewisham.

The £6 million project involved completely stripping out the existing concrete frame building and reconfiguration. A further two floors were also built on top in order to increase its capacity to 44.

The new building features shared amenity spaces to encourage socialising, such as a resident’s lounge, dining and relaxing areas. These shared spaces incorporate post boxes, an information board, sofas and a kitchenette. The luxurious development also opens onto a generous shared garden with raised allotments and wild-berry brambles.

Architects who worked on the project, RCKA explain that their design approach focused on identifying opportunities rather than constraints, allowing them to unlock a ‘handful of strategic moves, which turned strict technical requirements into imaginative solutions to encourage social interaction.’

NorDan products were the perfect choice for a refurbishment development like this one. Our fixed light windows allow extensive use of large glass areas and particular architectural styles. Additionally, NorDan fully reversible windows offer extra safety assurance, with integrated child safety restrictors that locks the hinge to operate in the ventilation position only. Works on Astra House took a total of 60 weeks and was completed by Spring 2018.
